He has extensive experience in education, having taught English Language and Linguistics for 18 years at schools and universities in Japan, the UK and continental Europe, before joining Cambridge. Martin graduated in Modern Languages from the University of Cambridge, and he also has an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex.
