The Age of Innocence (NE)
Set in 1870s New York society, The Age of Innocence follows Newland Archer, a young lawyer engaged to the charming and proper May Welland. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, a woman who has returned to New York after separating from her abusive European husband. Ellen’s independence and disregard for social norms deeply attract Newland, challenging his views on duty, tradition, and love.
As Newland becomes emotionally entangled with Ellen, he begins to question the rigid expectations of his high-society world. Despite his feelings, he marries May, hoping to live honorably. However, his internal conflict grows as he continues to long for Ellen, who ultimately chooses to leave America to avoid scandal and protect the people she cares about.
